Professor Jonathan Knight

BSc, MSc, PhD

Professor Jonathan Knight completed his PhD in 1993 at the University of Cape Town before working as a research fellow at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

He held the position of Head of the Department of Physics here at Bath from 2008 to 2013, and subsequently became the Faculty of Science's Associate Dean for Research. He was the founding director of the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials and has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers in top-flight international journals.

He took up the post of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) in August 2015.

As Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Jonathan takes the lead on knowledge exchange (including the Impact Acceleration Account) and public engagement with research. He is also a member of the GW4 Board, and leads on the GW4 work on shared research infrastructure.

Jonathan is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America. His own research interests include how modern technology enables us to fabricate wavelength-scale structures, particularly photonic crystal fibres, with applications in areas as diverse as new light sources, high power laser delivery, and atomic physics.
