    Abstract

Hemp-lime composites have generally to date been used for non-load bearing applications in timber framed buildings. The project developed load-bearing and non-load-bearing hemp-lime masonry blocks for use in low rise buildings. Hemp-lime composites offer an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional concrete and cement products, less energy is used and less carbon dioxide is produced in their production. The KTP project developed optimum mixes for the prototype blocks and then evaluated block properties in readiness for certification.
