Institution of Structural Engineers Awards 2011
ACE Bath graduates and tutors featured strongly in the IStructE Structural Awards 2011, presented on Friday.
Winner of the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence was no surprise: The London 2012 Velodrome, by Bath Architecture graduate Jonathan Watts, working with Hopkins Architects, and Bath Civil Engineering graduate George Oates, working with Expedition Engineering. The Velodrome also won the Award for Sports or Leisure Structures, and a Commendation in the David Alsop Sustainability Award, which was won by Buro Happold’s Wales Institute for Sustainable Education. WISE was engineered by Bath Civil Engineering graduates Toby Hodson and Jon Shanks, working with our Professors Pete Walker and Richard Harris.
The Heritage Award for Building or Infrastructure Projects was won by the Royal Shakespeare
Theatre, which like the Velodrome had also been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. The engineering
design team at Buro Happold was managed by Bath Civil Engineering Graduate Andrew Wylie, who picked
up the prize. This project too was a Bath special – Project Architect Simon Erridge is a Bath
Architecture Graduate! Professor Richard Harris was also heavily involved in this project.
The Award for Community or Residential Structures went to Frank Jensen of Søren Jensen
Consulting Engineers. Frank studied with us for a year as part of his undergraduate degree. The
Aviva Stadium in Dublin received a commendation in the ‘Sports or Leisure Structures ‘ category,
recognising the innovative work by our Dr. Chris Williams and Dr. Paul Shepherd which played a
critical part in Buro Happold’s design for this structure.
Professor Tim Ibell, Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, who took great pleasure in attending the ceremony, commented:
"The 2011 Structural Awards demonstrate that the vision, inspiration and education from which our students benefit during their time at Bath all combine together to produce special graduates. We are thrilled that so many projects involving our graduates have won these prestigious worldwide awards."
