Justin McAteer Wins Prestigious SPAB Lethaby Scholarship

Justin McAteer, a former student of Dr Michael Forsyth, who graduated in December has won the prestigious SPAB Lethaby Scholarship.

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, founded by William Morris in 1877, offers three or four scholars a unique nine month training programme in practical building conservation. The SPAB says of the scholarship, established in the 1930s:

"Today former Scholars are among the leading conservation experts in the United Kingdom, looking after some of the foremost buildings in Britain. Some are cathedral architects, some look after palaces, National Trust houses or English heritage scheduled monuments. Some Scholars, conversely, have devoted their careers to relatively minor buildings, such as abandoned medieval churches or vernacular agricultural buildings, producing work of the highest quality."

Justin is a structural engineer from Northern Ireland and flew into Bristol from Belfast each week to attend our lectures.
