Bath influence in the Institution of Structural Engineers
The 2013 Council of the Institution of Structural Engineers includes eight elected members who have profound links to the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
The eight include Professor Tim Ibell (Vice President, and Head of Department), Dr Antony Darby (Chairman of the Western Counties Regional Group, and Reader), Michael Dickson (Past President, and Visiting Professor), and five alumni of the Department (Kate Leighton, Mindy Lai, Ria Martin, Rob Paul and Mark Renshaw). All five alumni graduated within the past eight years.
The Institution of Structural Engineers is a global institution, with 25,000 members worldwide. It is the fourth largest engineering professional body in the UK, and the pre-eminent structural engineering professional body internationally. The above Bath-related representation makes up over 10 per cent of the entire Council membership.
Professor Peter Walker, Head of Civil Engineering at the University of Bath said: 'It is testament to the extraordinary education which we deliver at Bath that so many of our graduates go on to be leaders in the field of structural engineering.
Having such influence in IStructE is extremely important to us and to the profession, and is a great pleasure to see.'
