ACE academics receive 2013 Award for Excellence in Structural Engineering Education

First year project tutoring

Dr Mark Evernden, Dr Antony Darby and Professor Tim Ibell have received the 2013 Award for Excellence in Structural Engineering Education from the Institution of Structural Engineers.

As part of the blended-learning approach currently employed within the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the team's continued efforts to find innovative and inspiring ways to engage students in active learning have been recognised nationally with this award.

Using a mixture of physical modelling and e-resources to deliver formative feedback, the team has provided students with a series on innovative resources to help understand the key concepts of structural behaviour.  Many of the resources are publically available through the structures@bath blog.

The development of such activities within the Department has had a positive and far-reaching impact beyond the intended student body, inviting the academic community in a discussion on appropriate teaching methods.

"We pride ourselves on producing some of the most imaginative and able civil engineering graduates in the country.  This award is extremely important to us in recognising our continued dedication to ensuring that our students enjoy and value their structural engineering education.

"Having won a Commendation of the IStructE’s Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award last year (2012), it is gratifying that our continual innovations in teaching have, once again, been recognised this year."
