Profile

Dr Michael Barclay is a Post-Doctoral Research Officer in Building Physics working as part of the BRE  Centre for Innovative Construction Materials.

Mike studied a BEng in Civil engineering and an MRes in computer modelling in engineering at Swansea University.  After spending some time in industry, he started a PhD at the University of Sheffield School of Architecture. This was undertaken with Professor Steve Sharples and Professor Jian Kang as part of the COPSE project.

The project focused on linking whole building thermal performance with acoustic simulation and climate change weather data; the aim being to better understand these environmental effects on low energy ventilation systems.

Research

Mike joined the department as a Research Officer in June 2013, working with Dr Andy Shea on an EPSRC project investigating natural fibre insulation materials. His research involves the use of IES and WUFI modelling tools to simulate the performance of plant fibre based construction materials using data collected from field and laboratory testing conducted as part of the same project.

His research interests include:

  • Natural fibre materials
  • Building thermal performance
  • Building ventilation performance
  • Numerical modelling
  • Acoustics simulation
