Profile
Dr Harry Charrington joined the Department in the autumn of 2009. He is an architect, teacher and researcher, and is currently Director of Studies for the MArch.
Harry studied Architecture at the University of Cambridge in the 1980s, where he founded Scroope Cambridge Architecture Journal. After completing his studies he specialized in social housing and restoration work in Newcastle–upon-Tyne. He later lectured in the Department of Architecture at Newcastle University.
In 1994 he moved to Finland where he specialized in the design of timber buildings, and taught at Vaasa Institute of Technology, as well as at Helsinki University of Technology.
In 2000 he returned to the UK to UWE Bristol, where he was Programme Leader for the unique jointly-validated RIBA/RTPI BA Architecture & Planning degree. Later, he was Programme Leader of the MArch course, setting up the first new RIBA Part 2 course in the UK in over thirty years.
At Bath, he teaches in design studio, as well as lecturing in history, theory and urban design.
Harry was a Director and Developer of Springhill CoHousing in Stroud, the UK’s first new-build Cohousing scheme and a finalist in ODPM Award for Sustainable Communities 2005. He has curated exhibitions, written for journals, and lectured in a number of European countries as well as in the UK. He is a Trustee of the UK branch of the International Committee for the Restoration of the Viipuri Library.
Research
Harry completed his doctorate on the Alvar Aalto at the LSE. He has written articles and books on the practice of the Aalto atelier, including the oral history Alvar Aalto: the mark of the Hand, for which he was awarded the 2012 RIBA President's Award for Outstanding University-based Research.
He is a founding member of the University of Bath Politics of Memory Research group. Together with Mike Devereux he is researching the relationship of the planning process and design quality in the UK, as well as undertaking a European comparative study. He has co-chaired conferences exploring this area on behalf of CABE and the Planning Inspectorate.
