Dr Enrico Fodde
MEng, MA, PhD
Profile
Enrico Fodde is a Lecturer in Sustainable Building Design. His research interests are related to the use and conservation of natural building materials, the sustainable aspects and the conservation of earthen architecture, lime and the role of binders and aggregates, and archaeological sites conservation.
Since 2002 Enricio Fodde worked as consultant for the Division of Cultural Heritage (UNESCO Paris), the World Heritage Centre (UNESCO Paris), and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (UAE). He was formerly International Project Director of Moenjodaro (World Heritage Site, Pakistan), of one of UNESCO’s largest campaigns, and Field Director for the following UNESCO projects: conservation of the Buddhist monastery of Ajina Tepa (Tajikistan), the Silk Road sites of the Chuy Valley in Kyrgyzstan (Krasnaya Rechka, Ak Beshim, Burana), and Otrar Tobe (Kazakhstan). Since 2008 he is chair of the International Scientific Committee for Earthen Architectural Heritage of ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites).
Research
Employing the most appropriate methods in earthen buildings and lime mortar conservation has been Enrico Fodde’s interest in both practice and research since 1996. He developed a laboratory-based method for understanding how such materials will behave sacrificially when used for inserting in the historic fabric.
Between 2002 and 2007 Dr Fodde set up three laboratories that are now located in the Institute for Scientific Research and Planning on Monuments of Material Culture (Almaty, Kazakhstan), the National Museum of Antiquities (Dushanbe, Tajikistan), and the Kyrgyz State University of Construction, Architecture and Transport (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan). His work in central Asia focused on site direction for conservation, coordination of the laboratories, undertaking analysis of historic and repair materials (lime mortar, plaster, and mud brick), training local experts in laboratory activities and conservation methods, developing consolidation techniques for lime renders and mud brick, and carrying out structural repair of heavily decayed wall masses.
He is co-investigator in a £799,984 AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage project titled Parnassus - Ensuring Integrity, Preserving Significance: Value Based Flood Resilience for the Protection of Cultural Heritage from Climate Change Impact. The three-year (2010-2013) project develops an interdisciplinary method for quantifying damage to historic buildings from wind-driven rain and flooding.
Enrico Fodde was also co-investigator in a £371,596 DEFRA project titled Developing Hemp-Lime Low Carbon Construction for Mainstream Uptake through Innovation and Optimisation, see project website http://www.bath.ac.uk/ace/defra-hemp-lime-project/. The project is lead by Prof Peter Walker (BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials, University of Bath) and it was concluded in 2012.
