Martin Gledhill
BSc, BArch
Profile
Martin Gledhill qualified at the University of Bath in 1982 under Michael Brawne and Patrick Hodgkinson. For 25 years he worked as a practising architect, both within his own practice - Gledhill Walker Architects - and with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios amongst others.
Having been a visiting critic and tutor for many years Martin joined the Department of Architecure and Civil Engineering as a full time member of staff in 2005. He is currently responsible for the following roles:
- Admissions and Fair Access Tutor for BSc Architecture
- 4th Year Studio Leader
- Coordinator of All School Lecture series
- Chairman of SSLC committee
Martin has a particular preoccupation with the symbolism and spirituality of architecture, arising from a life long interest in Jungian psychology and theology. The connections between analytical psychology and the design process form part of an ongoing research paper and, in September 2012, Martin will be undertaking an MA in the subject. Martin is a member of the Scientific and Medical Network which is an international and interdisciplinary forum for exploring the frontiers of science, medicine, spirituality and human experience.
Martin travels widely during the summer recess looking at interesting contemporary architecture which informs his studio teaching. Martin fundamentally believes that architecture must provide us all with a sense of belonging, and that the crafting of buildings is an integral part of their conceptual agenda all of which should be demonstrated with strength and vitality in a contemporary manner. These aspects evolve through a process of rigorous, open and lively discussion with students.
