Dr Kent Harries


Kent Harries is the Leverhulme Visiting Professor in the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials. He is on sabbatical leave from the University of Pittsburgh where he is the Bicentennial Board of Visitors Faculty Fellow and an Associate Professor of Structural Engineering and Mechanics. He also holds a Secondary Appointment in the Department of History of Art and Architecture (Architecture Design) and co-directs the Nonconventional Engineering Materials (Pitt-NOCMAT) initiative at Pitt.

Kent has conducted extensive research in:

  • the use of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials in civil infrastructure
  • structural use of full-culm bamboo and the characterisation of bamboo materials
  • design and behaviour of prestressed concrete bridge elements
  • seismic design of high-rise structures.

Kent is the author of over 240 peer-reviewed technical articles. He co-edited Nonconventional and Vernacula Construction Materials: Characterisation, Properties and Applications with Dr Bhavna Sharma.
