Dr Carolyn S Hayles
BSc(Hons) PhD PgCHET PgCERT FHEA FRSA
Profile
Carolyn is a Lecturer in sustainable construction in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and has 18 years of experience working in the field of sustainable design and construction. As a researcher, consultant and educator she has worked in the UK, USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Carolyn’s teaching is in construction management whilst her research focus is on sustainable design and construction; in particular, sustainable decision making and climate change adaptation.
Carolyn graduated with a First Class BSc(Hons) degree in Geography and Geology in 1992. After completing a PhD in Applied Geology (weathering and conservation of historic building stone) at the University of Glasgow (1992-1995), she worked as a Materials Scientist and Senior Consultant at the Building Research Establishment for eight years (1995-2003).
Since 2004, Carolyn has been an academic. Her posts have included: a Senior Lectureship in sustainable construction and green building in the school of property; construction and project management at RMIT University, Melbourne (2004-2006); and a Lectureship in sustainable design in the school of planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast (2007-2011).
Carolyn joined the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath in 2013.
Research
Carolyn’s research and consultancy is in sustainable decision making in design and construction and, in particular, the use of decision support tools to support climate change adaptation. This has included a contribution to work for the World Bank and the UN on the economic modelling of climate change in terms of adaptation with Professor Paul Chinowsky at the University of Colorado, and research for the British Academy on decision making in post disaster housing reconstruction.
She has a particular interest in enabling strategies to adapt to low/zero carbon built environments; this includes researching perceptions and awareness of sustainable living. She developed the ABIA framework to support environmental behaviour change with Dr Moira Dean at Queen’s University Belfast.
Carolyn also undertakes research and consultancy on the conservation, restoration and the reuse of existing buildings, with a particular interest in low carbon retrofit and the use of traditional (natural) building materials in modern construction.
