Dr Saverio Spadea
M.Eng, P.Eng, PhD,
Dr Saverio Spadea is a Research Fellow in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, where he is working on flexibly formed concrete structures. He has a strong research interest in all aspects of structural engineering, with particular focus on the use of innovative materials and new building techniques to reduce energy consumption involved in the construction process.
Saverio completed his PhD in Structural Engineering and Building Rehabilitation at the University of Salerno (2010); he obtained a Master's Degree in Building Engineering with honours (2006) and a Bachelor Degree in Building Engineering with honours (2003) from the University of Calabria (Italy).
Saverio worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Salerno between 2010 and 2015, and was appointed as Visiting Research Scholar at McMaster University (Canada) in 2009 and 2010. Since 2007, he is a Chartered Engineer and provides specialist advices as Structural Engineer to a number of public and private entities in Italy.
Throughout his research, Saverio has written several scholarly papers in major international journals as well as regularly presented his research at international conferences. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Challenge Journal of Structural Mechanics and has been sitting on the Organizing Committee of national and international symposiums focusing on structural mechanics. In addition, he acts as a reviewer for several journals such as Journal of Composites for Construction, Composites Part B and Composites Structure. He was recently awarded the J. William Fulbright Scholarship in the category of Visiting Scholar (March 2015).
Saverio's research expertise lies in combining experimental methods with theoretical mechanics and viewing structures as complex systems, comprising structural forms, various materials and being part of the environment. He is interested in developing innovative structural materials and methods in the following topics:
- Fibre reinforced polymer reinforced concrete structures
- Nonlinear and buckling behaviour of thin walled composite structures
- Structural retrofitting of existing structures using advanced innovative materials
- Recycled plastic fibre reinforced concretes and mortars
- Innovative structures for energy efficient buildings
Saverio has built productive collaborations with world-class researchers at the University of Salerno, McMaster University, Aix-Marseilles University and the University of Miami. He has participated in a number of research projects on a collaborative basis, and initiated a collaboration between University of Salerno and McMaster University, involving industrial partners. He has contributed to the development of technical guidelines and safety standards for buildings, bridges and other infrastructure, both in Europe and North America
Presently, he is working on the EPSRC project EP/M01696X/1 "Knitting Bespoke Reinforcement for New Concrete Structures” which aims to utilise woven carbon fibre in novel geometries to act as reinforcement for optimised concrete structures. In the framework of this project, he will be visiting University of Miami as a Fulbright Scholar, from September 2015 to February 2016.
