Profile

He is Professor of Architectural Design, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Engineering and Design and Head of the Architecture.

Alex Wright is Studio Leader for the final year MArch studio. He is actively involved in architectural practice as the Principal of Alexander Wright Architects, an award winning design practice based in central Bath.

Alex was appointed as Director of Studies for the BSc in 2005 after having acted as a Design Tutor within the Department since 2001, and became Head of Architecture in August 2008. Alex studied as an undergraduate at Bath before undertaking his Diploma in Architecture at Cambridge University and his Masters in Design at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, where he studied as a Harkness Fellow. Alex Wright is currently a National Professional Representative on the Board of the ARB (Architects Registration Board). In recent years he has acted as an independent consultant to the ARB in the implementation of the revised criteria for Prescribed Qualifications, was an Independent Examiner for the ARB and served as a member of the ARB's Validation Advisory Group and the RIBA and ARB's Joint Visiting Board Panel.

Alex has acted at a visiting critic at several universities and is currently an External Examiner at Queens University Belfast, University of Kent and Cardiff University. Alex is also an Expert Advisor to The Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (NI) on architecture and the built environment and a member of the South West Design Review Group. He continues to act as a reviewer for the Architects Journal and Laurence King Publishing. Alex is also a member of the SCHOSA Council (Standing Conference of Heads of Schools of Architecture) and will be Chair of SCHOSA for two years from April 2012.

Alex is a recipient of the Mary Tasker Award. This award was given in 2008 and is made by University of Bath in recognition of excellence in teaching. In 2009 Alex received the Leadership in Learning and Teaching Award, and in 2011 he received the Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award, both from the University of Bath. In 2011 Alex was shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Innovative Teacher of the Year Award.
