Postgraduate Research

Exams invigilation

All postgraduate research students and staff are expected to help with this. Research students/staff who are funded by the University, DTA or £1500 studentships MUST help out with at least two invigilation slots each in both semester one and semester two. Other students who are self-funded or on EPSRC studentships will receive normal payments, and it is expected that they will volunteer too.

Generic Skills Training

During the first year of registration research students can take advantage of the various courses offered under the generic skills training programme offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Design. The programme varies slightly from year to year, but covers most of the basic skills requirements for research students. Funding for training other than that provided by the Faculty of Engineering and Design (described above), may be provided by studentships. Typically funding that may be used for training may be available in the following cases: DTA studentships may give contributions of up to £1,100 per year for training purposes. Research Council studentships may give contributions of approximately £500 per year for training purposes. In all cases the funding for training is managed centrally by the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Proposals for requesting funding for training purposes may be submitted in writing to the Director of Postgraduate Studies. The collected proposals are then discussed at the Faculty Research Students Committee.

Student and Department-led training initiatives

In addition to the generic skills training available at the University, if you are a doctoral student and wish to plan a project or event that will develop the skills of researchers, then you may be eligible to apply for the Fund for Postgraduate Researcher-Led Training Initiatives.

A training workshop on the theme of 'Responsible procurement in construction product supply chains' was held at the BedZED mixed-use office and housing development in London in November 2009. Funding for this event was secured through the Fund for Postgraduate Researcher-Led Training Initiatives. A report of the workshop can be found here.

e-Learning modules for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers now available in moodle
'Research Skills Online' is a series of online courses for researchers in Higher Education, providing an introduction to key research skills. The courses are provided by 'Epigeum', an e-learning company spun-out from Imperial College, London. The courses are suitable for all researchers, whether postgraduate or postdoctoral. Except where indicated, they are applicable to researchers whatever their discipline. The courses contain a mixture of videos, reading, slideshows and quizzes to check your understanding. Each course should take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

Submitting your thesis

Theses must now be submitted in electronic format as well as the hard-bound copy to the Library. These e-theses will be stored in the University research archive 'Opus' - www.bath.ac.uk/opus. Here they will be preserved and made freely available via the internet. They will be collected by the British Library as part of a project to gather PhD and equivalent theses from around the UK. Instructions for submitting an e-thesis can be found on the library website. There is also information on this page regarding the benefits and challenges (including copyright issues) of placing theses online.
