BSc Architecture:  Erasmus Exchange Programme

Munich - Erasmus web page

Spending the year in Munich opened my eyes to how connected Europe is and just how many experiences there are out there.

I have met new people and broadened my knowledge of cultures and the architecture to go with them. I would highly recommend the programme.

— Jonathan Crosthwaite,
TU Munich, Germany

Lyon at night Erasmus web page

Lyon is a great place to live and study, with lots of cultural events all year round. And you can easily travel to Paris, the Alps and the Mediterranean.

The School of Architecture is similar to ACE in its emphasis on architecture with a tectonic intelligence.

I enjoyed most of the units I took and I even had the opportunity to build a 1:1 prototype house!

— Wyn Lloyd Jones,
ENSA Lyon, France

Students who have studied abroad demonstrate motivation, initiative and independence, plus a working knowledge of another language. These are all qualities employers are looking for and the Erasmus Exchange Programme is the perfect way to acquire them.

Erasmus is the European Union's flagship educational exchange programme for Higher Education. It was introduced with the aim of increasing cross-cultural exchange and academic mobility among university undergraduates within Europe.

Erasmus forms part of the current EU Lifelong Learning Programme and provides the opportunity for students to undertake part of their academic studies within a host country.

At the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering we have one of the largest Erasmus Exchange Programmes of any architecture course in the UK, with 24 places at eight institutions in six countries.

When does the Erasmus Exchange Programme take place?

You can study abroad with one of our partner universities in the third year of the BSc Architecture programme.

Selected students may study abroad for the first semester or for the whole academic year (depending on your chosen university).

Where can I study?

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering currently has bilateral agreements with the following European universities:

France

Finland

Germany

Netherlands

Portugal

Spain

Who is eligible?

There are 24 places available and all current BSc (Hons) Architecture students are eligible to apply for the Erasmus Exchange Programme.

You will be offered the opportunity to join the Programme during the first semester of your second year, when the updated Erasmus Programme of institutions is introduced.

How are students selected?

Students are selected for the Erasmus Exchange Programme on the basis of

  • their personal interest, and
  • their performance in their second year of study.

Generally, an overall average mark of 60 per cent or greater is required for a student to be admitted to the Programme.

For all Master's in Architecture Erasmus programmes, an overall average mark of 65 per cent or greater is required.

The University of Bath will make the nomination on your behalf to the host institution.

The host institution sometimes may ask for the submission of a small design portfolio.

The offer of a place is ultimately determined by the host institution.

How is work assessed in the third year?

The Department will review students’ portfolios upon return at the beginning of September.

The academic transcript attained at your host university will also be submitted for the Department's student records.

The third year of study does not contribute to the final degree classification, so the assessment of your work is solely to determine your progression into the fourth year.

What happens with the third-year placement?

If you choose to study only for Semester 1, you must take a placement in Semester 2.  You can opt to take your placement in the host country, in the UK or elsewhere.

If you choose to study abroad for the whole year (both semesters), you do not need to take a placement. By taking a whole year under the Erasmus Exchange Programme, you will achieve the full 60 ECT credits.

Erasmus finances

If you take part in an Erasmus Exchange (or take your work placement in an EEA country) then you could qualify for an Erasmus grant funded by the European Commission to help with some of your expenses.

If you spend the full academic year on Erasmus Exchange and are subject to the UK student support arrangements, then you might also qualify for a reduction in your tuition fee to the University of Bath.
