Home from home, US-style

Toby Roger on placementNew job, new city… new country.

Doing a placement outside of the UK can be intimidating, but when third year student, Toby Roger, arrived in San Francisco last year, he knew who to call.

Toby’s mentor, 1994 graduate Mark Feasey, moved to the States 15 years ago, and was able to help Toby avoid some rookie errors.

“Mark was very friendly and helpful,” says Toby. “He gave me advice before I moved, and shared his own experiences. Then when I arrived in San Francisco he was incredibly welcoming – he even invited me round for dinner with his family.

“It’s been great to hear about his career progression, and especially the things he’s learnt along the way. I’ve had an amazing opportunity to learn something new from someone who’s been through it all before.”

And for Mark, too, it’s been a rewarding experience. “It’s been great to be able to play a useful and practical role – a home from home – in Toby’s placement. He’s a great guy and I’m sure we’ll continue the relationship beyond his stay in San Francisco.”
