Hadi Abulrub - hybrid innovator
Dr Abdul-Hadi Abulrub is an
alumnus of the University of Bath with an MSc in Dynamics and Control, 2002 and a PhD in
Engineering, 2007. Initially, he joined the University English Language Centre before completing an
MSc. His positive and unique experience at Bath made him delighted to be awarded a PhD
scholarship.
Currently, Hadi is CEO of a UK enterprise, McCamley Middle East Ltd, collaborating with researchers at the University to pioneer an innovative technology that could revolutionise clean energy generation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). He is returning to join the prestigious School of Management for the Executive MBA.
Why Bath?
“I decided to study at Bath because it is a top UK university, with an excellent record of supporting its students. I adored its safe campus, overlooking the world’s most beautiful heritage city.
“I continued with a PhD as I wanted to join a knowledge network of advanced technologists at a university that competes worldwide. My PhD was with Dr Necip Sahinkaya who acted as a personal adviser and continuously supported my professional development. I also gained professional and leadership skills that enable me to originate ideas that could be commercially exploited to solve industrial challenges.”
How did the idea for the hybrid technology evolve?
“The world is facing major challenges: rising energy prices, the need to secure energy supplies and fight climate warming. To respond to these challenges, today’s energy systems have to be transformed. Over the last decade, attention has begun to swing toward the MENA region with its rich — and broadly unexploited — wind and solar resource.
“Our company realised that integrating various energy technologies achieve the best solution. Our development programme for an innovative hybrid turbine is a step towards smart and clean cities, well integrated power networks and enhanced return on investment.”
Why did you choose to develop the technology with researchers at Bath?
“The University’s research is defined by excellence internationally. It has a wonderful community of innovators who are willing to strategically support SMEs to achieve their business targets and drive the UK economy.”
What are your hopes for the future?
“My short term objective is to take the renewable energy initiative to the international arena.
However, with imminent future green policies of the MENA governments, there is a strong potential
to realise my long-term goal to act as a consultant and deliver on major strategic projects where
multiple international stakeholders are involved.”
