Year Abroad students meet European alumni

Alumni event in MunichFour different countries, three different languages; a week of events across Europe saw third year students on their Year Abroad and some of our European alumni meet for the first time.

In November 2013, four informal social and networking evenings held in Madrid, Paris, Brussels and Munich gave languages students, new to the cities that will be their home for up to 12 months, the chance to link up with local alumni.

Many graduates choose to continue their studies or pursue a career in the city where they spent time as a student. The events enabled alumni to share their expertise and knowledge about career prospects and life after university.

The events were also valuable opportunities for students facing the daunting prospect of up to a year overseas with the chance to widen their social circles – and not just the students! In Madrid and Munich, where alumni events have never been held before, attendees were surprised by the numbers of fellow Bath graduates on their doorstep.

Many thanks go to local volunteers, Marc McHugo (BSc IMML (German) 2007), Marinos Kalligas (BSc IMML (Spanish) 2009), Julian Hale (PG Interpreting & Translating 2000) and Alexandra Heidler (BSc Business Administration 2009) for their support.

The event series also generated interest in the Department of Development & Alumni Relations’ online mentoring programme, which is currently in its pilot phase. Once the online platform is developed, more Year Abroad students will have access to first-hand advice on the job hunt in their target language from alumni overseas.

All of the groups have plans to meet again and will be on hand to welcome next year’s students as well, widening the community of Bath students and alumni despite being hundreds of miles away from campus.
