Alumna Linda Fletcher passes on advice to students
Linda Fletcher (BSc Business Administration 1983) recently returned to campus to give two talks, one for the benefit of current students and another to an academic group based at the University. She shared her experiences and expertise as Legal Director at international law firm Pinsent Masons, where Linda specialises in environment, climate change and sustainability.
The first talk provided background information and tips to those aiming to make a
career in law. She spoke about the routes available to becoming a lawyer, the training required and
what kind of person it suits. As Linda herself completed an undergraduate degree in business
administration at the University, she is perfectly placed to advise students on converting to law
from a different discipline.
Her second talk was delivered in conjunction with I-SEE, the Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment. The talk explored the many legislative measures and policies aimed at delivering reductions in carbon emissions and their success, or not, in delivering these reductions. The audience asked many questions and enjoyed learning about the legal background to delivering a low carbon economy.
Linda said: “It did feel strange returning to the University after almost 30 years but once I caught sight of the familiar Wessex House and the busy Parade it began to fall into place.
“There has been a terrific rate of growth and it is clear the students greatly enjoy these extra facilities.
"It was really good to speak to the students about other career options, although I did feel rather old passing on wisdom, but it made me realise that I do now have a lot of experience which was good to share and will hopefully encourage others to consider and pursue various options once they graduate”.
While she was on campus, Linda also visited our excellent research facilities to learn about the current PhD research projects on campus and was particularly interested in the hip replacement projects that are undertaken in conjunction with manufacturers and surgeons to produce a perfect solution.
There are many ways to contribute to life on campus and we’re always looking for people who want to get involved – for more information, contact us at alumni@bath.ac.uk or visit www.bath.ac.uk/alumni/get-involved.
