University’s new Centre for the Arts benefits from £300K gift

ICIAThe University’s new Centre for the Arts has been boosted by a £300,000 gift from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The £11 million landmark building at the east end of campus, which is being funded by the University, alumni and other supporters, is due to open in summer 2014. This gift from the Garfield Weston Foundation, along with more than £100,000 of support from other alumni and friends, represents a significant step towards the University’s fundraising target.

The new Centre will replace the existing Arts Barn with modern facilities for creating, developing and performing music, theatre, dance and the visual arts.

More than a third of Bath students currently take part in extra-curricular arts activities – from musical theatre to subsidised one-on-one instrument tuition with professional tutors. The Centre will enable many more students to get involved, along with members of the community.

The new Centre will also become the base for the University’s renowned Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA), which celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year.

The gift from the Garfield Weston Foundation follows a previous grant to support the University’s Life Sciences Research Facility on campus.
