BUBC e-news
Welcome to the first Bath University Boat Club alumni e-newsletter. Our 2011 season has been our most successful yet, including coming in at 43rd at Head of the River and having five crews qualify at Women's and Royal Henley. You can read about more of our successes below.
We've been delighted to see so many former members at various events throughout the year and hope to continue and improve communications with our alumni. If you have any suggestions, let us know.
2011/12 is shaping up to be to a big year for us as we work with the University to bring in a part time coach. Look out for more news about how that project progresses as the year goes on. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy catching up with all the news from the Club. Feel free to email us care of the Alumni Relations team at alumni@bath.ac.uk if you have any feedback.
Best wishes,
Rob Ashburner (Mechanical Engineering 2014)
2011/12 Chairman
and Oliver Horncastle (Economics & International Development 2011)
2010/11 Chairman
Head of the River Race
The BUBC Men went all out at Head of the River and improved on last year's fantastic result, finishing seven places ahead at 43rd despite injury and illness causing several last minute substitutions. The Novice 1st VIII posted the fastest time of the day, even though they rowed in sixes because of equipment failure. The Women also had some great results. Nicki Godbold (Mathematical Sciences 2011) won the IM3 pennant as part of a composite crew, the Senior Women came 101st in a composite with Bristol University and the Novice Women finished 215th.
British Universities & Colleges Sport
In February 66 rowers went to Peterborough for BUCS Head of the River, winning a fantastic 27 BUCS points (the sixth most points of the 45 competing universities). They gave some remarkable performances, including five top six finishes in Championship events. In spite of the terrible weather, Bath enjoyed a massive show of support on the banks.
Despite equally terrible weather at BUCS Regatta in early spring, the Club brought back both silverware and BUCS points, with all four squads managing to get at least two boats each into finals. The most notable performances were from novice men entering in the single sculls; three entered, two capsized and Roderick Ripamonti (European Studies & Modern Languages 2014) became a club hero after he got back into his single on the line and still made it through the time trial.
Club of the Year!
The rowers dominated the 48 other sports clubs at this year's University Blues Awards. BUBC claimed Club of the Year for its outstanding organisation, commitment, participation, communication and community interaction, as well as its performance. Congratulations to University Club Member of the Year Rob McDougall (Electrical & Electronic Engineering 2011), and also Jack Cadman (Economics 2012) who won the Tugendhat Trophy for Sporting Endeavour, Sean Bathe-Taylor (Architecture & Civil Engineering 2011) who took home a Full Blue, Gabby Rodriguez (Sports Performance 2010) who took a Half Blue and Hannah Gavin (Education 2011) who earned a colour.
CrewBath on tour

For this summer's training camp BUBC went to the river Saône in Mâcon, southern France. The Club were guests of Régates Mâconnaises, the former club of French exchange student and Bath rower Flo Cointet who won his second national title just before the camp. BUBC was welcomed by a lecture on French training style given by Head Junior Coach, Jacques Doussot, and relayed by two translators. Club members returned from the camp having made huge gains in technique and fitness, with a thirst to dominate at Henley - and some awful rowing tan lines!
Henley

Henley saw some fantastic results for BUBC women. Nicki Godbold reached the final of Elite 8s, Gabby Rodriguez reached the semi final of Senior 1x and the novice women reached the quarter finals of Intermediate 8s. Two Men’s IVs qualified for the Prince Albert at Henley Royal, and both showed real promise in their first round draws against ASR Nereus and Manchester. Bath A missed out on the semi finals by less than 3/4 length to seeded crew, Oxford Brookes A. Similarly, Bath B lost by just 1 3/4 lengths to Harvard A.
