E-news for alumni and friends

February 2015

There are no two ways about it, 2014 was an outstanding year for the University of Bath.

Not only did we come top for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the second year running, but the Research Excellence Framework (REF) also ranked us as one of the leading universities for research.

REF placed us 12th in the UK (excluding specialist institutions), finding 87% of our research ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We’re particularly proud that they highlighted the impact of our research - it shows we’re making a difference. You can find out how we’re doing this in this short video.

If you make it back to campus this year, either for our reunion or other events, you’ll notice that quite a lot has changed. Work has begun in earnest on the new home for our Department of Psychology and Institute for Policy Research (10 West), and the land has been cleared for the Faculty of Engineering & Design building (4 East South).

But it’s not all building sites. The Edge is finished, and it looks amazing (we can see it from our window). It’s opening its doors to the public this Saturday 7 February, so if you're in the area do come along from 10am for a day of visual art, music and dance.

This year promises to be a particularly busy one for us as we build towards our 50th anniversary. But with the most satisfied students, world leading research and a campus to be proud of, we couldn’t be in better shape to face our half-century mark.

With best wishes,

Molly, Rachel, Julie, Sarah, Laura, Dan and Martin.

Making prehistory

Dr Nick Longrich, a palaeontologist from our Department of Biology & Biochemistry, has discovered a new dinosaur. He identified the species while studying fossils which had been kept in a Canadian museum for 75 years. The new dinosaur is called Pentaceratops aquilonius and is similar to Triceratops.

A seismic change for dolphins

New technology developed by Bath graduate Professor Jaques Guigné, in collaboration with his former PhD supervisor Professor Nick Pace, could reduce the impact of seismic imaging on the behaviour and migration habits of marine life, including dolphins. .

Best of Bath

Our winter award ceremonies took place on 9 and 10 of December, so we’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Bath’s newest graduates and honorary graduates to our growing family of alumni – you really are in good company. Here are the stories of six of our amazing alumni who have reached the pinnacle of their chosen career.
