Alumni & friends

May 2012 e-news

It's been a hive of activity here over the last couple of weeks. The sun has arrived at last and those who aren't cramming in last minute revision for exams can finally enjoy campus in full bloom, sitting by the lake or outside the Parade Bar. We welcomed back hordes of alumni earlier this month to celebrate the anniversary of their graduation as part of the first weekend-long Alumni Reunion; and we proudly hosted the Olympic Torch Relay and the thousands of spectators who lined Convocation Avenue to catch a glimpse of the iconic flame before it continued down the hill into the city.

You can read more about Bath's Olympic story and find out about students, staff and alumni involved in the Games at the University's new Olympics & Paralympics website.

Keep a look out for your latest issue of BA2, your alumni magazine, which will be with you soon. We hope you will enjoy reading it and, as ever, please let us know what you think!

Finally, we were pleased to introduce the new alumni email service, BathMail, in March's newsletter. If you haven't yet, you can find out more and sign-up for your exclusive email address at

With best wishes,

Molly, Jo, Julie, Alison and Rosie

It's official, we're best in the south-west

Bath has risen to 9th out of 120 universities and colleges across the UK in the new Guardian University Guide 2013, the highest ranking in the south-west. Amongst key strengths recognised by the guide were very high levels of student satisfaction and the employability of our graduates. See the guide. Our students also dominate the region when it comes to sport, triumphing at the inaugural 'Varsity – Best of the South West'! Read more.

Alumni Fund Scholar wins Chancellor's Prize

Kate Aldridge, who will graduate this summer with an MSci Mathematics & Physics, has been awarded the Chancellor's Prize. She has achieved consistently high academic results whilst contributing significantly to the University community. Kate is the recipient of an Alumni Fund Scholarship and we are proud to have been able to support such an outstanding representative of the University, and hope that you are too. Some of you may remember her giving a speech at Charter Day 2011, our annual day to thank all of our donors. Congratulations Kate! Read about Kate's achievements.

A picture speaks a thousand words

Researchers at the University have once again showcased their work at the annual 'Images of Research' competition. The winning entry, Come rain or shine... by Dr Melina Freitag, presented research into improving weather forecasting through collaboration between the Met Office and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The image highlights the variety of different weather conditions here on the University campus - many of which you will have experienced first-hand! See all of the images.

Hitching a ride – was it you?

Recently one of our alumni kindly gave a lift to Andrew (Mechanical Engineering 2011-16) and another student participating in the RAG Paris Hitch. They would really like to thank you but we don't know who you are! All they could tell us was that the charitable graduate is called Michael, studied Computer Science in the early days and now lives in Europe. If it's you, or if you think you might know who it was, please let us know.

Did you participate in RAG? Take a look at our RAG archive and if you have any photos you would like to share, please email them to us at
