E-news November 2013

Opening on a cheerful note - it’s official: University of Bath students are the happiest in the UK, according to the National Student Survey 2013. In a year which has also seen us named University of the Year for student experience, and recognised as the best campus university in the UK, it’s clear that studying at Bath brings many benefits, not only academically and professionally, but socially as well.

We hope that you had a good time here too. Our latest alumni survey results suggest many of you did - a whopping 94 per cent of you who responded said your university experience overall was excellent. Whether you graduated five or 45 years ago, we’re here to make sure you get the most out of our alumni community. Based on your feedback we’re working on improvements to our programme in a number of areas, so please watch this space for updates.

Finally, we’re hoping to help you spread personal news, observations and a bit of nostalgia with our new blog. ‘On Parade’ is a place where you can share what you’re doing as Bath alumni, wherever you are in the world. Read the latest entries - from one graduate’s journey relocating from the UK to Beijing, to an alumna’s perspective on a get together at Mexico’s tallest building - and please share with your friends.

With best wishes,

Molly, Rachel, Jo, Julie, Clare and Paola

Open House with our new Chancellor

Our new Chancellor, HRH the Earl of Wessex, was installed at Bath Abbey on 7 November, in a ceremony which also saw honorary degrees awarded to Paralympic swimming superstar Ellie Simmonds and Rev Peter Price, the former Bishop of Bath & Wells. Many alumni came to help celebrate our University’s special day. Find out what happened.

A global hello

Our international groups have been busy lately, planning “welcome home” events for returning students, supporting our placement students as they journey overseas, and widening professional circles for Bath graduates outside the UK. This autumn, alumni have come together in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Mexico, Vienna, Dubai, New York, Seoul, Tanzania and Indonesia. A week of events across Europe has seen alumni meet in Paris, Madrid, Brussels and Greece, concluding in Munich on Wednesday 27 November – and to round it all off, our Hong Kong alumni will be meeting at the end of the month.

If you are relocating, or travel regularly for business, please keep us up-to-date with your contact details to make sure you don’t miss your invitation to future events wherever you are in the world.

Alumni get connected in China

Crowd-funding and Big Data to fight superbugs

Researchers from the University of Bath and Emory University (USA) are hoping that online crowd-funding can help in efforts to develop a new way to identify and treat toxic superbugs, such as MRSA. Watch the video they’ve made.

Could you run a training session or workshop for students?

Skills Training has been providing innovative and vocational training workshops for University of Bath students for over a decade. Last year almost 1,200 students attended workshops on topics as varied as "Starting a Student Business" to "Improvisation for Creativity and Confidence".

This year over 100 training sessions will be delivered by academic staff, student trainers, graduate recruiters and national & local business people – and the Students’ Union is looking to expand the scope of its training.
Find out more about the workshops on the SU Skills Training webpage and if providing learning opportunities for students is something you might be interested in then please get in touch by emailing
