October 2012 e-news

Today is the University of Bath’s 46th birthday. It was on 25 October 1966 that our Royal Charter was granted, and we have much to celebrate.

First, we’re cheering the news that we have been ranked third in The Sunday Times University Guide. This is a brilliant achievement for an institution that is not yet 50, and one which augurs well in the run up to our half century celebrations.

Second, we’re still recovering from the excitement of having 10 Olympic and Paralympic medalists within our student and alumni body! We cheered on Bath’s Olympians and Paralympians when they enjoyed an open-topped bus tour of campus and the city centre, and honoured their achievements at a special ceremony at the University, filmed by current students.

Finally, we’re delighted to have welcomed a record number of freshers this semester. Being a fresher may be a distant memory to some, and a few might find campus hard to recognise these days too – why not take a virtual tour of the latest development plans and find out what’s changing!

We hope you share in our pride at what has been a momentous few months for our university. You can find out more about Bath’s recent successes and plans for growth in the following stories.

With best wishes

Building a campus for the future

The University is investing in a three-year campus improvement project to make it even better for future generations. Work has already begun on a new teaching space which will hold 2,000 people, with more accommodation and a new Centre for the Arts to follow. Take a virtual tour.

Alumni ethical entrepreneurs hit the high street

We reported on their success back in May; now two Bath alumni have secured a distribution deal with high street retail giant John Lewis for their recycled bag range, ElephantBranded. The project provides one school bag for a child in Africa or Asia for each ElephantBranded bag sold. Find out more.
