Social history book - Bath, Bristol and the Chew Valley, Don't learn my son no sums

Book Cover 'Don't Learn my Son no Sums'

It’s the feeling in your tummy when you can’t do the sums. It’s cornflowers in the fields and football on the rec. It’s clutching a sticky ha’penny in your hand waiting for the sweet shop to open. It’s Slap Arse Lane and the little old man who wore his wellies on the wrong feet. It’s north-east Somerset as seen through the eyes of a school and its village from the early 1800s to 1979. Anecdotes and contemporary records guide the reader through the twists and turns of learning and teaching, snow, war and smelly toilets.

“Interesting snippets of information and amusing anecdotes keep you turning the pages.” (Bristol Evening Post)
“The author has cleverly used the school as the central lynchpin around which he has built a vivid picture of life in a small village over a period of nearly 200 years. The book will appeal to anyone with an interest in social history.” (Chew Valley Gazette)
“You will love this book! Thoroughly recommended.” (Practical Family History)

The author, Steve Ward, graduated from Bath in 1975 (BA European Studies). The book retails at £14.99, but is available to Bath alumni at £12.50 incl. UK postage and packing.
