Enabling excellence across the University
Alumni Fund grants support research in all areas of the University.
These grants provide essential equipment for departments and research centres on campus, aiding the implementation of ground-breaking research which will potentially benefit the wider community. They also allow for undergraduate training within the departments and improve the quality of teaching here at Bath. Other grants will open doors for newer projects, allowing research to continue and develop.
Cancer research
Grants are providing a boost for a variety of pioneering cancer research projects.
The Department of Chemistry has been able to upgrade its specialised imaging microscopes, which will be used to test new molecules able to diagnose and treat cancer cells. Similarly, the Department of Biology & Biochemistry will be able to buy a high-resolution camera capable of detecting proteins associated with a cell type conversion that has been linked to oesophageal cancer.
Space exploration
The Alumni Fund provides equipment for innovative final year student projects across campus.
Recently an Alumni Fund grant enabled the purchase of a Cube Satellite chassis and other equipment, allowing undergraduates in the Faculty of Engineering to complete a business design project. The students developed spaceborne GPC jamming detectors, giving them valuable, hands-on experience of satellite design and development, and a direct advantage when they seek jobs in the space industry.
“A big thank you from all of us involved goes to the Alumni Fund, without which this exciting CubeSat project would not have been possible.”
— Dr Julian Rose, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
