Alumni & friends

Our alumni and friends support new scholars

This year we have welcomed 151 new scholars to the University. Their scholarships were awarded on 31 January, by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, in an inspirational ceremony to celebrate our scholars’ achievements and thank  our many alumni and friends who support them.

We are particularly proud this year to celebrate our two newest scholarship programmes. Global professional services firm EY have just awarded scholarships to 10 Accounting & Finance students, following a rigorous assessment process. Santander Universities are also supporting 10 talented musicians, such as Chemistry student Anna Mroz, an outstanding cellist, saxophonist and organiser of many musical events.

"A rare privilege"

Helping our inspiring students is something which our supporters greatly enjoy. Peter Troughton, Pro-Chancellor of the University and supporter of two scholars in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, says, “the scholarship programme is one of the best things I have ever been associated with - to help someone achieve their ambition is a rare privilege.”

Our high achieving scholars range from elite athletes to budding entrepreneurs. First year Engineering student, Esther Dunstan-Sewell, won her scholarship from the James Dyson Foundation for her innovative design of a motorised pram. Student Eilidh Prise came to Bath after winning Modern Pentathlon Gold at the 2013 European Youth Championships. She is being supported by alumnus Bill Whiteley to study mathematics whilst training for future medal success.

Our scholarships also relieve financial pressure on students and their families. Helen Sims, mum to one of our Roper scholars, says, “our daughter is proud to be a Bath student. Knowing she is content and so well supported has made sending our first child to university so much easier.”

It is not just financial support but also advice and motivation which our alumni and friends give to scholars. Take a look at the postcards with messages of support sent in by donors.
