Academic Skills Centre

Academic writing

Writing is an important skill for success in your studies at university and also in your future career.

If you want to improve your writing skills, we offer a range of support designed to meet your needs and fit in with your other commitments.

Our support

Our 10-week and 4 week courses help you learn the features of good academic writing and develop your writing skills with lots of opportunities to practise and receive feedback from your teacher and peers. Our academic writing workshops cover the same content as the 10-week courses but you can sign up for individual sessions according to your needs.

If you would like more personalised advice on a specific aspect of your writing or help with a writing assignment, a one-to-one tutorial is a good option. You can ask questions about all aspects of your written work and get feedback. Or if you have a quick question about a writing assignment you are working on, you can come to see us in our drop in sessions in The Skills Zone.

All of our courses, workshops and tutorials are all free of charge for all students.

Our writing support can help you with skills like:

  • understanding the writing task
  • structuring your essay or report
  • making your writing flow
  • using sources in your writing
  • referencing and citation
  • avoiding plagiarism
  • writing in an appropriate academic style.

10-week course

A 10-week course can help you to:

  • learn about all the features of good academic writing
  • take a step-by-step approach to improving your writing
  • study with the same classmates and teacher every week.

We have courses aimed at different groups of students so check the course title to make sure you are choosing the right course for you.
