Pre-sessional programme

If you have applicants for your programme whose English level does not meet your entry requirements, one option is for them to join our Pre-sessional programme. This prepares students for academic study on their degree programmes whilst also helping them to reach the required English language level. This programme runs year round, from October to September, and caters for students from IELTS 3.5-7.5.

Many students choose to join the Pre-sessional programme instead of retaking the IELTS test (or an equivalent English language proficiency test) as it is a more thorough preparation for and orientation to British academic culture and expectations.

Students choose a particular Pre-sessional course based on their current English language level and future degree programme. For individual and overall entry scores needed for each Pre-sessional course related to specific degree programmes, please download the entry requirement information.

Combined offers

Applicants who are currently no less than one IELTS band (or equivalent) overall and in each component below the entry requirements for their degree programme may be eligible for a PS4 combined offer entry, which means that the ten-week PSM4 or PSG4 course is combined with their postgraduate taught course making a fourteen-month course. Please note that if an applicant requires a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, they will need to hold an IELTS (or equivalent) of at least 5.5 overall and no less than 5.5 in all four components to be considered for the 10-week combined offer. If their English is not at this level, please email the Skills Centre to find out about the stand-alone option.

Applicants who are currently no less than IELTS 0.5 (or equivalent) overall and in each component below the entry requirements for their degree programme may be eligible for a PS5 combined offer entry, which means that the five-week PSM5 or PSG5 course is combined with their postgraduate taught course making a thirteen-month course.

They will contact you directly to ask for this, or you may make them a combined offer when they apply if they meet all of the requirements.
