Opportunity to join our team of Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Trainers

Wed Apr 29 08:00:00 BST 2015

The Students’ Union (SU) is seeking volunteers to join an exciting new project to further enhance the SU’s Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) programme. Join our information session to find out more on Wednesday 6 May 2015 at 13:15 -14:00 in Chancellors' Building 3.15.

PAL is a programme run by students for students. It involves trained, higher-year undergraduate students (PAL Leaders) working in pairs to facilitate regular, timetabled study sessions (PAL sessions) for students in the year below. Leaders do not re-teach students, instead sessions are used to promote collaborative learning through exploratory discussion, provide opportunities for leaders to share their experiences and model effective study skills.

In 2015-16, PAL will be operating across 16 different subject areas and approximately 100 leaders will be volunteering as part of the programme.

Following a successful Teaching Development Fund (TDF) bid, secured in collaboration with the Academic Skills Centre (ASC), the SU is expanding and enhancing the PAL programme. One development will be the establishment of a team of trainers equipped to deliver the initial PAL Leader training. Both University staff and PhD students are invited to volunteer to become part of this team.

Benefits of being part of this team include:

  • Broadening your own work experience and developing key transferable skills
  • Gaining a better understanding of the student experience by working directly with undergraduate students
  • An opportunity to find out how another area in the university operates

Trainers will need to be available for two consecutive days between 16 and 27 September 2015, to deliver the PAL Leader training. There will be a number of training groups, each of approximately 16 students, with training delivered over two consecutive days. PAL Trainers will need to offer some flexibility in the dates they will be available to deliver a two-day course within this period.

Prior to the PAL Leader training in mid-September, prospective trainers will themselves need to attend training sessions to become part of the team. The dates for these sessions are:

  • Friday 5 June 2015, 09.30 – 16.30: Exploring the PAL model
  • Wednesday 9 September 2015, 09.30 – 16.30: PAL Leader Training: Putting theory into practice

Attendance on both days is essential.

For further details and to find out how to get involved please email Oliver Schofield, Peer Support Coordinator, or come along to an information session on Wednesday 6 May 2015 at 13:15 -14:00 in CB 3.15.
