World Fairtrade Day 2012

TAKE A STEP FOR 2012

Why does February feel like such a long time ago?  Thinking back, Fairtrade Fortnight gave us the opportunity at the beginning of the year to set a trend, to start buying Fairtrade products with the “Take a Step” campaign and maintain the momentum throughout the year.

The activity on campus encouraged us to switch to Fairtrade at the People and Planet stall in the Student Centre.  Luke George 2 nd year undergraduate won the Fairtrade hamper full of Fairtrade goodies when registering his step online.

What’s next in the Fairtrade calendar I hear you cry?

Saturday is World Fairtrade Day and as you’re lying in bed thinking how can I make a difference, why not swap your coffee or orange juice to Fairtrade?  Emily Parry, MPhil/PhD Research in Electronic and Electrical Engineering says, “I *love* fairtrade instant hot chocolate!  It tastes lovely! *REALLY* nice stuff, and then there's the principle of the thing on top of that. Delicious!”

Or if you’re feeling more generous here’s a few suggestions to help you create a Fairtrade brunch with friends.

  • Blueberry or banana pancakes
  • Museli
  • Full range of flapjacks and cereal bars
  • Muffins, brownies and banana or sultana loaf cake
  • Fairtrade jams and  spreads

While many high-street supermarkets will stock Fairtrade products the range will vary from store to store.

Each step leads to a better deal that millions of farmers and workers in developing countries urgently need.
