For Staff: Licensing
Licensing is one of the processes which allows commercially valuable ideas and inventions to be transferred to companies. This is achieved by identifying and/or securing some form of protection around the ideas (e.g. through the use of copyright, confidentiality or patents) and negotiating agreements, either with existing companies (licensing), or by forming new companies (spin-out formation) often with other parties (joint-ventures).
As an opportunity approaches the point at which it is ready to spin-out (or license), Bath Ventures will engage and work together with Intellectual Property & Legal Services to advise, negotiate and draft related legal agreements.
Licensing is most appropriate where it enables or improves one specific family of products either already offered or that can be easily offered by existing companies.
Benefits of Licensing
- World-class ideas are turned into real working products and services for the benefit of licensees
- Further benefits for the economy and for society (e.g. new drugs, environmentally beneficial products)
- Financial benefit for all: a proportion of financial benefit is paid to the University; the team contributing to the inventions also receive a share of this, as an incentive
- Further opportunities for research, consultancy and additional technology transfer may be stimulated
