About BIME
The Institute is an independent body. It was founded, and continues to be maintained by charitable grants and donations. BIME is based in the Wolfson Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. It has strong links with the University of Bath and is guided by a board of trustees composed of medical consultants, university academics, scientists, engineers and industrialists. BIME continues to work closely with other departments of the University, particularly Mechanical Engineering and the new School for Health. BIME has contacts with a wide range of special interest groups, clinicians, academics and other design / engineering organisations within the UK.
BIME is managed by our director, Dr Nigel Harris. Dr Harris leads a team of professional design engineers and support staff who involve disabled people and their assistants as well as medical and healthcare professionals in the design process. The team places great emphasis on developing a sensitive understanding of the needs of the person and a willingness to work closely with them to evolve solutions appropriate to their needs.
A key aim of the Institute is to ensure that successful design solutions are available for all those who can benefit. BIME has a not-for-profit production unit and can undertake low-volume production. We have also developed links with manufacturers, marketing companies and distributors to ensure that successful design solutions are made available. |

The Institute started in 1968, since then BIME has been involved in well over 300 projects, with over 100,000 items of equipment having been made available. All this work has depended on the support of a large number of charitable trusts and companies, to whom the Institute is very grateful.
