Engineering Design Services
BIME takes referrals from the Bath Royal United Hospital Trust and other local hospitals where there is a need for professional engineering design support. Around 30 referrals are received a year varying from modifications to orthopaedic implants to the mounting of oxygen bottles on the prams of neonates in preparation for discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
We provide an engineering assessment of the practical problem and develop purpose designed items to help. The scheme uses a formal referral system under the supervision of the Clinical Scientists at BIME. All new designs undergo a risk assessment before being handed over to the user(s)
Paediatric Service
For many years a major part of this work has been to provide a one-off
design service for the Children's Centre at the Royal United Hospital,
Bath. The referrals vary from simple modifications of standard equipment
to completely new designs with many novel features. The service helps
maintain a high standard of care for these children and also provides
the Institute's designers with an insight into the kinds of problems
the children encounter and the potential for sensitive engineering
design to be used to assist them.
Radiotherapy and Medical Physics
The other major area of support is for the Radiotherapy Department where there is an important and ongoing need for calibration of support equipment and other devices particularly the Linear Accelerators at the Royal United Hospital. An important part of this support is not just the engineering design expertise but also the availability of extensive mechanical engineering workshops at BIME.
