About BIME

Bath Institute of Medical Engineering is a design and development charity working in the fields of medicine, health care and assistive technology for disabled people.

Our team of electrical and mechanical design engineers work on a large number of projects. These range from technology for people living with dementia to very practical items of daily living equipment. We are able to take an initial idea through to a finished product. Our design philosophy is inclusive and the views of disabled people, carers and professionals are integral to our work. The Institute aims to ensure all successful designs are made available to whomever can benefit.

The Institute is an independent body. It was founded, and continues to be maintained by charitable grants and donations. BIME is based at the Wolfson Centre, part of the Royal United Hospital in Bath. It is managed by the University of Bath and is guided by a board of trustees composed of medical consultants, university academics, scientists, engineers and industrialists. BIME continues to work closely with other departments of the University, particularly Mechanical Engineering and the School for Health. BIME has contacts with a wide range of special interest groups, clinicians, academics and other design / engineering organisations within the UK.

BIME is managed by our director, Dr Nigel Harris. Dr Harris leads a team of professional design engineers and support staff who involve disabled people and their assistants as well as medical and healthcare professionals in the design process. The team places great emphasis on developing a sensitive understanding of the needs of the person and a willingness to work closely with them to evolve solutions appropriate to their needs.
