Bath Science Café

The Bath Science Café is an informal monthly science forum held in one of Bath's local pubs. All are welcome and entrance is free but a small contribution to cover speaker's travel expenses is greatly appreciated!

The Science Café is on the second Monday of the month, 7.30pm for an 8pm start. The Raven Pub, Queen Street, Bath.

Bath Biosciences Summer Schools

Are you interested in a bioscience career?

Our summer schools will give you a flavour of what it is like to be a bioscientist and the career prospects in this field. You will experience cutting-edge research lectures and do laboratory experiments, along with mentoring from undergraduates and gain confidence in the skills needed to succeed at university.

Bath Bioscience UK Summer School - There are 15 places available on the Summer School with students staying on the Bath campus for 2 weeks in July 2013.

Bath Bioscience International Summer School - There are 26 places available on the Summer School with students staying on the Bath campus for 2 weeks in mid –late July 2013.

Academic programme

The programme will include lectures from eminent academics in various bioscience research areas, followed by technical workshops (methods to include molecular biology, imaging, proteomics among others). Mentors will work with you and you will work in groups to prepare posters and presentations to share what you have learnt with the other Summer School students.

You will also take part in activities preparing you for study at university:

  • Developing skills in writing extended essays, critical thinking and independent learning
  • Making a successful UCAS application
  • Student finance at university
  • Choosing your degree programme
  • Career pathways and opportunities

The evenings will show you the social side of university life and you will have the opportunity to try out new sports at our outstanding Sports Village or join in arts and music taster sessions.

How to apply

Please see the application criteria below then complete the application form and email to bss-summer-schools@lists.bath.ac.uk. The deadline for applications is 18 Jan 2013.

The Bath Bioscience UK Summer School is open to students (home UK only) currently studying in Year 12 or equivalent at maintained schools or colleges in the UK. The programme is not open to independent (fee-paying) schools or international students. Priority will be given to students who:

  • are the first generation in their family to attend university
  • come from neighbourhoods with low overall progression rates to higher education
  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE and are taking A levels in Chemistry and at least one from Biology, Mathematics and Physics
  • attend schools or colleges with a low overall A level (or equivalent) point score
  • are under the age of 18 at the time of the summer school

The Bath Bioscience International Summer School is open to international students currently studying in Year 12 or equivalent at schools or colleges in the UK or overseas. Priority will be given to students who:

  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE and are taking A levels in Chemistry and at least one from Biology, Mathematics and Physics
  • are under the age of 18 at the time of the summer school
