Access to Instant Messaging or Group Communication tools
Instant messaging tools can play a vital part in working effectively from a remote location for a number of reasons: they enable rapid communication with colleagues or friends, they can be used to feed news to people or to a webpage, or even used as a marketing tool.
There are a number of different tools available for messaging and each one has its own strengths that make it useful for certain tasks. For more information on a few tools available see our Instant Messaging pages:
The University has its own Instant Messaging Service called Jabber, which can be accessed by a free downloadable messaging client called Pidgin. This is a person-to-person messaging tool which is ideal for rapid one-to-one communication. To find out more about this service visit our pages on Pidgin and Jabber.
