Creating a VPN Connection to the University of Bath Using Microsoft Windows Vista
Section 1: Finding the correct Control Panel applet
- Click on Start → Control Panel → Control Panel Home → Network and Internet
- Select Network and Sharing Center

- Alternatively, click on Start → Control Panel → Classic View → Network and Sharing Center

Section 2: Using the Connection Wizard
- Next select Set up a connection or network from the Tasks list on the left
- Select Connect to a workplace
- Click Next

- Select Use my Internet connection (VPN) by clicking on it:

If you have not already set up your Internet connection, then you will be asked if you want to set up one before continuing. Setting up an Internet connection is beyond the scope of this document, so click I'll set up an Internet connection later to continue.

If you have set up your Internet Connection previously then you will be asked if you want to use this connection for connecting to University VPN service.
The choice is yours. If you are permanently connected to the Internet via a ADSL or Cable router, it is probably better to select the Let me decide later option.

- Click Next
- Enter vpn.bath.ac.uk as the Internet address that you wish to connect to
- Call the Destination name University of Bath VPN

If you wish to Allow other people to use this connection then you will be asked to provide permission by the User Account Control service that runs on Windows Vista.
- Either click Continue
- Or enter your Administrator credentials to grant permission
- Click Next

- We recommend that you don't enter you User name and Password
- You should enter the Domain as CAMPUS
- then click Create

- When the wizard report that 'the connection is ready to use', click Close

Section 3: Finalizing the VPN Connection Settings
- Return to the Network and Sharing Center (see Section 1)
- Select Manage network connections from the Tasks list on the left
- In the list of Network Connections, right-hand click over the University of Bath VPN connection
- Select Properties from the drop down menu

You will then be asked to provide permission by the User Account Control service that runs on Windows Vista.
- Either click Continue
- Or enter your Administrator credentials to grant permission
- Click Next

- In the University of Bath VPN Properties window, select the Options tab:

On the Options tab ensure that the Dialing Options (Display progress while connecting, Prompt for
name and password, certificate, etc. and Include Windows logon domain) are all ticked:

- Select the Networking tab
- Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) item in the This connection uses the following items list box
- Click on the Properties button

- On the General tab of the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window
- Click on the Advanced... button

- On the IP Settings tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window, locate the setting "Use default gateway on remote network", and configure as follows:
- Untick the box if you do not require access to journals (or other external resources the University has access to), or if you wish to use iPlayer, Youtube etc. This will ensure non University traffic is directed to your ISP, and not through the University VPN connection.
- Tick the box, if you want to route all traffic through the VPN connection. This will allow access to the same resources as a PC on campus, including external resources the University subscribes to, such as Journals.

- Next select the DNS tab
- Next to the label DNS suffix for this connection, enter campus.bath.ac.uk
- Ensure that Register this connection's addresses in DNS is unticked

- Finally click OK on the windows that are open (Advanced TCP/IP Settings, Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties and University of Bath VPN Properties)
Section 4: Using the University of Bath VPN Connection
Most people these days have an 'always on' broadband connection to the Internet through a router. If you still dial-up manually then please connect to the Internet before continuing.
To start your VPN connection to the University
- Click on the Start button
- Select the Connect To item on the right-hand side of the start menu

- Select the University of Bath VPN
- Click on Connect

- To connect to the VPN service enter your username, password and set the domain as CAMPUS
- We recommend that you don't save your password as an extra security layer
- Click Connect
