The firewall

If you are using the University's campus network, whether the public access PCs, docking, wireless or ResNet your computer will be protected from malicious attacks by a firewall. A firewall is a type of filter that protects your computer and the University network from malicious attacks (e.g. installing spyware, adware, viruses and stealing passwords).

Even though you will be protected by the firewall, you still need to try to be careful with email attachments, accepting program installations from websites and make sure to have Sophos Anti-virus installed.

If you are off-campus you may have a personal firewall installed. In this case you will have to set it up if you want to use the VPN service.
