Warnings to change your passwords
BUCS is to shortly start locking computer accounts where the password was last changed prior to 2008. Account holders have already received two requests to change their password and will receive one final request to change their password before this is done.
Please note this action will not result in the loss of your files and no data belonging to accounts will be deleted, it will just prevent access to them.
In the event that you discover that you can no longer access your account, you should visit the Service Desk on Library Level 2 with proof of identity, your password will then be reset - as we are required to check identification we are unable to reset passwords over the telephone.
Changing old passwords helps us to ensure that all user passwords are strong and meet current security requirements. Modern attackers are becoming much more sophisticated and by ensuring that all of our passwords are strong we can help to prevent unauthorised access to University systems. A strong password is one that cannot easily be guessed or deduced, is a non-dictionary word, and should contain a mixture of letters, numbers and other characters.
Once changed you should not tell anyone else your password this includes work colleagues as this is a breach of the University's IT Acceptable Use Policy.
