Panopto Lecture Capture hits 1000 recordings in March 2011

The number of people on campus using Panopto, the university lecture capture solution, has grown significantly since its deployment in September 2010. In March 2011, the total number of recordings reached 1000.

Many University staff have discovered how easy Panopto is to use and how it can really enhance a range of activities. For example, and as a means of enhancing the student experience, this innovative web browser-based application empowers students to watch lecture recordings and take additional notes on material they might have missed in the lecture first time around.

"The use of Panopto to deliver the factual content of the unit to students as self directed study, has freed up face to face lecture time for interactive discussion” says Dr Christine Edmead, Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology

“This has led to a much deeper and more engaging learning experience for the students as through discussion and questioning I can both ascertain and provide feedback on their understanding of the material they have studied, whilst supporting them in applying their new knowledge to solve research questions."

What is Lecture Capture?

This technology allows for the simultaneous capture of audio, video and any application used on a PC (including Microsoft PowerPoint) which can then be shared in a variety of ways during and/or after the presentation.

Panopto allows recordings of presentations to be made and relayed to audiences. The application allows the viewer to start, stop, pause and rewind recordings, enabling them to actively engage with the lecture capture in at time and place most convenient to them. Content that has already been recorded using this mechanism can be viewed on the the Panopto website.

How can you record using Lecture Capture?

Recordings can be made in two ways:

1. By using a Panopto enabled lecture theatre

Equipment has been installed in selected lecture theatres to allow recordings to be made automatically. The user can schedule recordings through the Audio Visual Bookings. Subsequently, the recording of the
lecture happens unobtrusively to both staff and students.

See here for a list of Lecture Capture enabled rooms.

2. By downloading the Panopto Recorder

You can download a recording application onto your own (or departmental) PC or laptop, to enable you to record your presentation using off the shelf microphones, cameras or webcams connected to the PC. Through the Panopto website, the user can manage how it is distributed.

For more on downloading Panopto read our recording presentations page.
