Do not respond to phishing emails - never reveal your password.
The university is receiving a number of spam / phishing emails that ask you to visit a web form where they then ask for your university password. BUCS would like to remind all staff and students to not respond.
Any genuine university web page will have the address https://www.bath.ac.u k.
If you are unsure if an email is genuine do not send any reply please forward to abuse@bath.ac.uk. Please apply full headers before forwarding the suspected email to abuse@bath.ac.uk. To do this in Thunderbird you can take the following steps: select View, Headers, All.
If you do fill out your details, please change your BUCS password
What to do if you receive a spam email?
- In most cases, just delete it.
- If in doubt as to whether something is a hoax do a Google search with the title of the email as your search term.
- If you have been sent an email asking for your university username and password please contact us at Abuse@bath.ac.uk - we will never ask for your password in an email.
- In serious cases, for example if it is offensive and contains or appears to be offering illegal material, you can report the incident to the Helpdesk (ext 3535), or email abuse@bath.ac.uk. Please include full headers.
How do I know it is a fraudulent email?
There are a few signs to look for:
- The from addresses are often (although not always) free email services such as Yahoo! or gmail
- The to address will often say undisclosed recipients
- If an offer is too good to be true, it probably is a scam
- If they ask you for your password
