Who can attend these courses?
These courses are available to both Staff and Postgraduate students (a small charge may apply for Postgraduates).
Please Note: These training courses are not available to members of the public or external organisations.
What training options are available?
- Instructor-led, classroom based training
- Self-paced, supervised training with an instructor on hand to provide assistance if needed.
What levels of training are available?
- Level 1 courses are the easiest and are suitable for beginners
- Level 2 courses are more suitable for users who are confident in using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, but want to learn more about the applictions.
- Level 3 courses are more advanced courses, usually focusing on a single topic or subject in greater depth than most courses.
Courses
All courses assume you some previous experience using Office 2010, some courses also have additional pre-requisites, to enable you to get the most of the course please ensure you read these carefully to help you decide on the most apporiate courses for your needs.

Access 2010 Courses
We have recently undertaken a review of all the Access courses we offer, those listed below are different to those offered in the past with some new courses on offer and some courses which have been brought together to complement each other. Please ensure you read the course pre-requisites closely as you may need to attend a combination of Instructor led and self paced workshops, for further information on the suggested route through including pre-requisite and optional courses click here (pdf file).
Access 2010 : Database Concepts (Self Paced)
Course Level: Level 1
Mode of Delivery: Self Paced Workshop with Tutor Support the course takes around 2 hours to complete but you may find that you finish the material in a shorter or longer time.
Pre-Requisites: This course assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description:
After the course you will be able to:
- Understand how Access is used and how to navigate around it
- Design a database with lookup tables
- Create a database structure using Access 2010
- Add records to a new table
- Sort and filter records in a table
- Describe Tables, Forms, Reports and Queries in Microsoft Access
Target Audience: Staff and Post Graduates who use Office 2010 and wish to know how to create databases and to manipulate data to provide viable information.

Access 2010 : Database Design (Instructor Led)
Course Level: Level 1
Mode of Delivery: Instructor Led Workshop
Pre-Requisites: This course is aimed at those needing to design and build a database, you should have completed the Access Database Concepts course or have equivalent knowledge of creating a simple database. This course also assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description: This course will give you the skills and knowledge necessary to analyse your existing data to help you design and efficient and robust database structure.
After the course you will be able to:
- Define the purpose of a database
- Build a prototype table structure
- Use 3 tests to Normalise the data
- Create tables in access
- Define a primary key
- Understand relationships between tables
- Use Lookup Wizard
- Edit table joins
- Create a new join between tables

Access 2010 : Basic Forms, Queries & Reports (Self Paced)
Course Level: Level 2
Mode of Delivery: Self Paced Workshop with Tutor Support the course takes around 1.5 hours to complete but you may find that you finish the material in a shorter or longer time.
Pre-Requisites: You should have completed the Access Database Concepts course or have equivalent knowledge of creating a simple database. This course also assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description: This course introduces the user to basic skills needed for producing information in forms and reports and generating queries on data.
After the course you will be able to:
- Create simple and effective queries
- Create meaningful reports from tables
- Create and use a variety of forms
Target Audience: Staff and Post Graduates who use Office 2010 and wish to know how to create databases and to manipulate data to provide viable information.

Access 2010 : Tables - Validating & Formatting (Self Paced)
Course Level: Level 2
Mode of Delivery: Self Paced Workshop with Tutor Support the course takes around 2 hours to complete but you may find that you finish the material in a shorter or longer time.
Pre-Requisites: You should have completed both Access Database Concepts and Access : Basic Forms, Queries & Reports or have equivalent knowledge before attempting this course. This course also assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description: This course introduces the user to formatting and data validation using tables in Access 2010
After the course you will be able to:
- Change the fonts and format used in a table
- Move and resize columns and fields in a table
- Freeze and unfreeze columns in a table
- Hide and unhide columns in a table
- Assign default values to a field and make them mandatory (required)
- Enter validation rules for a field

Access 2010 : Simple Queries (Instructor Led)
Course Level: Level 2
Mode of Delivery: Instructor Led Workshop
Pre-Requisites: You should have completed both the Access Database Concepts and the Access Basic Forms, Queries & Reports course or have equivalent knowledge of creating a simple database. This course also assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description: This course introduces the user to simple querying techniques and expands on the knowledge gaining in the Access Basic Forms, Queries and Reports Course.
After the course you will be able to:
- Create queries including queries using expressions
- Edit queries
- Sort query data
- Display NULL values
- Use calculations in queries
- Create parameter queries
Target Audience: Staff and Post Graduates who use Office 2010 and wish to know how to create databases and to manipulate data to provide viable information.

Pre-Requisites: You should have completed the Access Database Concepts, Access Basic Forms, Queries & Reports course and the Access 2010 : Simple Queries course or have equivalent knowledge of creating a simple database. This course also assumes that you have a knowledge of working with a computer, opening programs and are happy using a keyboard and mouse.
Course Description: This course introduces the user to advanced querying techniques and expands on the knowledge gained in both the Access Basic Forms, Queries and Reports Course and the Access 2010 : Simple Queries course.
After the course you will be able to:
- Design and create aggregation queries
- Understand nested queries
- Design and create multi-table queries
- Design and create action queries
Target Audience: Staff and Post Graduates who use Office 2010 and wish to know how to create databases and to manipulate data to provide viable information.

- Work with objects and controls
- Move and align controls
- Understand object properties
- Add unbound controls
- Change tab order
- Insert date and time into a form header
