What is Sophos Anti-Virus?
Sophos Anti-Virus is a software program that can be used to keep your PC protected against the threat of viruses, trojans, spyware, adware and potentially unwanted applications (PUAs)*.
* Adware and PUA detection is only available in Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7

How do I get it?
Those whose computers are Centrally managed either by Active Directory or by their local supporter will automatically be updated with the current version of Sophos without having to contact anyone.
Those who would like to use Sophos but are not University managed.
This includes:
- Home computers belonging to staff and students
- ResNET
- Docking services
These computers will need to have Sophos Anti-Virus installed individually. The process is explained below.
University managed computers (Active Directory)
A University Managed Computer (Active Directory computers) allows the University to have control over what programs are available for use.
New programs are added to the central directory, which in turn adds the program to all Active Directory computers. This prevents the need for individual installation, saving time and allowing large numbers of users to have instant access.
For those computers managed by the University, your IT Supporter will ensure that your computer has Sophos Anti-Virus installed, which will be kept up to date via the central installation directories.
Does the University manage my computer?
To see if your computer is University Managed you need to view your login screen. If there is a Campus option in the drop down menu then you are in Active Directory and your computer will be automatically updated.
Please Note: not all University managed computers are automatically updated and will require manual installation. These are computers that do not have a 'Campus' option on login. If you believe that your computer needs manual installation then follow the instructions below or contact support.
Non University managed computers
Before you start you must:
- Have uninstalled any other anti-virus software from your computer.
- Be a current member of staff or student, with a valid and enabled BUCS Account.
- Have one of the following operating systems installed on your computer:
- Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
- Apple Mac OS X 10.2+ or Mac OS X 10.4+
- Linux on Intel (Red Hat/SUSE Linux/Turbolinux) see Sophos documentation for more information
- Have installed the latest security patches and service packs for your computer.
- Have downloaded the appropriate copy of the software.
- Have a Network/Internet connection for continued protection.
How to download and install

To download the Sophos Anti-Virus software you will need to enter your BUCS username and password. This information will be entered using a secure connection that will keep your details safe.

Updating Sophos Anti-Virus
Once installed Sophos Anti-Virus should receive updates automatically and it will continue to do so as long as you are a member of the University. The program uses your credentials (username / password) to check for this. If you change your password you will need to amend your Sophos Antivirus credentials to continue to get the updates.
