Messaging tools
How to use Pidgin/ iChat and Jabber
Why would I need a messaging tool?
- Rapid communication with colleagues or friends
- Improve communication in groups and business
- As a news or information feed
- As a marketing tool
What tools are available?
There are many tools available for messaging but we encourage the use of the following three.
Pidgin - Instant messaging (IM)
Pidgin is an instant messaging client that allows you to connect too many IM services like Jabber, ICQ, MSN, thus enabling you to see all your IM services through one client. Jabber is the instant messaging service used by the University that is compatible with Pidgin and has already got groups defined that are available to you. To download Pidgin go to their website http://www.pidgin.im/
For more information about how to set up Pidgin and connect to the Universities Jabber visit our How to use Pidgin page:
Twitter - general marketing and news
This is a micro blogging tool that limits the user to 140 characters. Posts (tweets) can be made through many mediums from mobiles, instant messaging and the web. Tweets made are not to a singular person but can be viewed by anyone registered on twitter that chooses to follow your posts. What makes Twitter ideal for marketing and news is the ability to add URLs in with the message allowing you to reference other posts made on websites or blogs. Visit the Twitter website http://twitter.com/.

Yammer - group messaging
This is again a micro blogging tool but unlike Twitter it has been designed for enabling businesses to simply and quickly communicate their current activities to groups. You can set up and follow groups in Yammer as well as single colleagues. Like Twitter the information that you post is small, concise and does not disappear, so can be read quickly at peoples leisure. To join or create a Yammer group go to their website https://www.yammer.com/
