Windows Terminal Services
What is Terminal Services?
Windows Terminal Services and is a means of distributing software to multiple users. Instead of running an application directly from your PC, you open a terminal window and run it from a central server.
Advantages
The advantages to using a software application via Windows Terminal Services are:
- the package uses resources on the server rather than on your pc (may work better)
- software installed on these servers can be accessed from anywhere by an authorised user (including from home via dialup)
- upgrades only have to be done on the servers, simplifying the process and reducing support overheads
- the servers are centrally supported and therefore offer service resilience (i.e. not susceptible to hardware failure) and a formal backup procedure
Things to consider
If you have an application that you would like to use via Terminal Services you need to consider the following:
- the application needs to be compatible with Windows Terminal Services
- the application must be appropriately licensed
Most of the University's teaching software is now accessed via our Windows Terminal Server. The listing of software can be found in the main software catalogue. Request for new software on Terminal Services can be made here.
