Make time to connect with others around you to feel supported, encouraged & part of a community. Talk, listen & support others & they will do the same for you.
There are a number of surprising health benefits to friendships and communities including lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of depression. This can often be the result of having your own support network you can turn to when needed or having people who make you laugh and share the same interests. Connecting with people doesn’t need to be time consuming though:
- talk to someone instead of sending an email
- speak to someone new
- call someone instead of sending a text
- catch up with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while
- make time to really listen to a friend
Volunteering is a great way to connect with others and contribute to a community. The Students’ Union have a number of Volunteering Opportunities and students groups you can get involved in or you could search on Do-it to find all the opportunities available locally. Volunteering can also be a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills, keep active, reduce stress and improve your confidence.
Another great way to meet new people is through a student group or society. The Students’ Union have a number of Student groups you can join.
