Get involved with the doctoral community
We've set up some activities to help you connect with other postgraduate research students. Find out what’s happening over the next few weeks.
Helping you to settle in
We're a small team of existing doctoral students who are keen to make sure that you feel at home within our Doctoral community as quickly as possible.
We have all been in your position and found the best way and to get a really positive start is to build a supportive network of colleagues and friends.
Your immediate research group or department is a great place to start for sure but don’t stop there.
We’re always happy to try and answer any questions you might have about doctoral life (there are no stupid questions), to point you in the right direction for advice or anything else you might need, or just to offer a cup of tea and a chat.
Doctoral Induction activities
Over the next few weeks there are some great opportunities for you to start making the wider connections that will make doctoral life a fun and fulfilling experience.
Come along to the induction events and those organised for you by your department, school or faculty. We hope to see you there.
If you have started as a PGR student within the last year, come along to see all the interesting places around the University that you might not have realised existed. You can also suggest anything specific that you would like to see.
This takes place every Wednesday and Thursday until 3 November 2016 at 4pm.
The Students’ Union and Postgraduate Association (PGA) have also organised some great events to help you settle in. Make sure you check them out.
Lunch & TED talk
An opportunity for all PGR students from across different discipline areas to meet informally over lunchtime.
Bring your lunch, meet other students and watch brilliant TED talks on screen. New and continuing doctoral students are welcome.

Coffee (& Tea) Tour in Bath
We're organising a tour of some of the many coffee spots that Bath has to offer. The city is renowned for having surprisingly excellent, creative coffee shops and we'll sample a few of their creations during a lazy Sunday afternoon.
You can join us at any time during the tour:
- 1.15pm in Mokoko, across from the train station
- 2.30pm in Colonna & Smalls, Queen's Square
- 4pm in Society Café, Kingsmead Square
- 5.45pm in Hunter & Sons, Milsom Place
Please note it's a buy-your-own-coffee event, we'll just show the sights and recommend the best coffee!
Yoga for relaxation and mindfulness meditation
Learn how to ease stress and calm your racing mind. This taster session will introduce relaxation techniques and breathing exercises, including:
